Besides my dried mint leaves providing me with tea year round before bed and making my Thai Pork recipe rockstar (email me for the recipe if you want it!), my second favorite thing mint does—it repels bugs I don't like, including..... HOUSEFLIES, MOSQUITOES, ANTS, aphids, squash bugs, fleas, and even mice. So when you go out our deck & front doors....you find MINT (and lavender and basil), all of which help keep the flies antisocial with our house.
It's finally here! GARDENING SEASON (and weather!!) For those that know me, I love to eat. More importantly, I love to cook....and I value knowing where my food comes from. So what does this have to do with housing? A LOT. You have to live in a house that has room for a garden if that is your thing. Or access to an awesome community garden area. Or love spending money for your CSA. CSA's aren't an option in our area (I loved my CSA while in San Fran though....). Dreaming of gardening starts in December for me, I always order seeds on New Year's Eve day. It's gets me excited for the new year! I start seeds inside around March 1 for some things (like tomatoes and peppers). Make sure to invest in grow lights and warming pads to help germination. And FANS (not ceiling)!! I condition the plants to changing winds so they don't get so leggy and adapt faster when transplanted. One thing I HATE about gardening --the bugs! From cucumber bugs to gnats. But use different plants to your advantage, see Mint insert to the left. Got the garden in late, so....we have only harvested mint, chives, cilantro, radishes, mustard greens and lettuce so far. Have a great week!
